Your Task:

PR/HYLI’s primary goal is to educate young Hispanics to become active citizens in our democratic society. Central to this educational goal is civic engagement. The purpose of being civically engaged is to create an active corps of people who conduct services in their communities, participate in organizations that comprise our civil society, and engage politically with initiatives, service opportunities, and democratic events. Hispanics have the civic responsibility to engage in ways that promote the causes which impact us and our communities. We must work together to overcome obstacles and ensure that important causes are at the forefront of the democratic process.

In an essay of 525 – 750 words, describe a Hispanic individual or organization that successfully promoted civic engagement to advance their cause. Include how you as a Hispanic can use the lessons from that experience to advance a cause of importance to you.

Be sure to use the attached rubric to guide you as you write your essay; support your arguments with evidence from your research on this topic and distinguish your claim from alternate or opposing claims.

Guidelines:

  • Write your essay in either English or Spanish
  • Clearly define civic engagement as you will discuss it
  • Develop an argument, explaining why civic engagement is important
  • To develop your argument:
    • Establish your claim about how an individual or organization successfully promoted or is promoting civic engagement to positively impactthe local, state, or federal community
    • Distinguish your claim from alternate or opposing claims
    • Use specific, relevant, and sufficient evidence from at least three appropriate sourcesto support your claim as you develop your argument
    • Identify each source that you reference with MLA or APA formatting, both parenthetically(inside your paper) and in a properly formatted works cited page, in the last page of your essay (this page will not count toward the 525 – 750 word limit)
  • Once you have developed the above argument, proceed to illustrate it with your own experiences and/or ideas. To do that:
    • Identify a cause that is important to you
    • Explain how you would advance the cause you identified in the previous bullet by applying the lessons learned you’re your research and thinking about civic engagement as you worked on this project and, if applicable, your experiences
  • Organize your ideas in a cohesive and coherent manner
  • Maintain a formal style of writing in your selected language (English or Spanish), following the conventions of standard written English or Spanish

Tu Tarea
